This coalition emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Address Young People's Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the grievances raised by the new generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which led to considerable loss of life.
"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.
The September revolt was sparked by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.

According to the official agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
